Alibaba vs 1688 vs Made-in-China: which platform to use

Which B2B platform fits your stage of buying, what each one really protects and how to compare offers fairly.

Quick answer

Alibaba.com is the most practical start for a foreign buyer who needs English, export-minded suppliers and payment protection inside the platform. 1688.com is China’s domestic wholesale marketplace, with a wider range and often lower listed prices, but it needs Chinese, local payment and careful export planning. Made-in-China.com is an alternative B2B directory where audited profiles help. None of them guarantees a factory, quality or compliance with your market’s rules.

Quick answer: first order and no one in China → Alibaba.com or Made-in-China.com. Price benchmarks with Chinese-speaking support → add 1688. On every platform, verify the company and approve a sample before paying.

Alibaba vs 1688 vs Made-in-China at a glance

The goal is not to find the lowest price in a listing but to choose the channel that fits your stage of buying. A first-time importer needs simple communication and a traceable order. An experienced buyer can search the domestic market, but must handle Chinese-language communication, payment, consolidation and export.

Platform Best use Advantage Main risk
Alibaba.com A first international enquiry English, export processes, Trade Assurance A profile does not prove own production
1688.com Domestic price benchmarks and buying inside China Huge range, local prices Language, payment, export and claims
Made-in-China.com A second source of suppliers Clear B2B profiles and audited-supplier reports A profile audit does not check your specific order
Practical rule: use platforms to find suppliers and document communication. Decide on payment only after checking the company’s legal name, bank account, sample, specification and claims terms.

When Alibaba.com is the right start

Alibaba.com is built for international B2B trade. Suppliers usually communicate in English, know export documents and can quote EXW, FOB or CIF. That lowers the entry barrier, but you still need to tell a manufacturer from a trading company or a hybrid of both.

Trade Assurance only helps when the order, the payment and the agreed parameters actually run through the platform’s supported process. It does not protect a verbal promise on WeChat or money sent to another account. Write material, dimensions, tolerances, colour, packaging, lead time, the inspection standard and how deviations are handled into the order itself.

Do not move the payment off the platform for a small discount. If a supplier sends a new account or asks for a private transfer, confirm the change through a second channel and compare the beneficiary with the licensed company.

When 1688.com makes sense

Alibaba Group describes 1688.com as China’s leading integrated domestic wholesale marketplace. Its natural customer is a Chinese business, not a foreign importer, so listings often use Chinese, local payment methods, domestic shipping prices and terms without export service.

A lower listed price is rarely your final landed cost. Add translation and negotiation, domestic freight, consolidation, inspection, export documents, international shipping, duties, VAT or sales tax and product testing. Some sellers cannot or will not act as the exporter. With branded goods there is also a risk of counterfeits or missing authorisation.

1688 is excellent for price benchmarks, finding components and for companies with a Chinese-speaking team or a reliable partner in China. For a first order without Chinese, the cheap listing is often expensive to manage.

When to add Made-in-China.com

Made-in-China.com is a separate international B2B directory and works well as a second search channel. Send the same specification to several companies and compare who asks technical questions, offers a realistic lead time and can document what it produces.

An “Audited Supplier” has been verified on site by an inspection company the platform works with, and the audit report is available to buyers. That is useful, but it does not mean every shipment will be flawless, that a certificate covers your model or that the company will not change material after sample approval. A supplier audit and a product inspection are two different layers.

If you find the same company on several platforms, compare the legal name, address, website, bank account and product range. Do not base trust on photos or the number of years next to a badge.

A safe process from enquiry to first payment

  1. Write a technical specification. Without it you are comparing prices for different products.
  2. Contact five to eight suppliers. Judge the quality of the answers, not only the speed.
  3. Verify the company. Licence, legal name, address, bank account and capacity — see the eight supplier checks.
  4. Order a paid sample. Mark it as the reference and document its parameters.
  5. Agree on inspection. For a production run, a photo of one unit is not enough — plan quality control.
  6. Pay traceably. The beneficiary and terms must match the order.
  7. Check conformity before shipment. After dispatch you have far less leverage.

For products sold in the EU, the UK or the US, the importer carries its own obligations. Markings, a declaration of conformity, safety information and identification of the responsible business cannot be handed to a platform with one line in the order.

A simple decision by situation

Buying for the first time with nobody in China? Start on Alibaba.com or Made-in-China.com — and do not skip verification. Already know the product, need domestic price benchmarks and have Chinese communication and logistics? Add 1688. For regulated, expensive or branded products, the platform is only a source of contacts; technical checks, the contract and compliance with your market’s rules carry more weight.

Local help is most valuable when you need to tell a factory from a trader, confirm details by phone, visit a site or keep one specification consistent from sample to production. If you are meeting suppliers at the Canton Fair, see Canton Fair interpreter and buyer support.

Worked example: comparing offers without distortion

A company needs 1,000 metal display stands. On Alibaba.com it finds an exporter with English communication, a FOB price and Trade Assurance. On 1688 it finds a cheaper-looking unit, but the seller quotes domestic delivery, Chinese invoicing and packaging for the local market. On Made-in-China.com it finds a third company with an audited profile and a higher price that can explain the surface treatment and load test.

Comparing three numbers next to photos is the wrong method. Send the same drawing, material, tolerance, test, packaging and Incoterm to all three. Only then will you see whether the cheaper price includes the same sheet thickness, corrosion protection and export packaging. A quote for a different product is not a competing offer.

The winner is not always the lowest price. For a first run, a supplier who answers precisely, admits limits, sends the right sample and accepts a pre-shipment inspection is usually worth more. Record why you rejected each supplier — “price excludes packaging” or “bank account does not match” is more useful next time than “too expensive”.

FAQ

Quick answers

Is 1688 always cheaper than Alibaba?

No. The listed price can be lower, but domestic freight, consolidation, export, translation, inspection, duties and taxes change the result. Compare the total landed cost for the same specification.

Does Trade Assurance guarantee product quality?

Not automatically. It helps with orders run through the supported platform process, but protection depends on precisely written terms and evidence. A sample and production checks are still needed.

Can I buy on 1688 without a company in China?

It can be possible through an agent, but you need to solve Chinese communication, payment, a domestic address, consolidation and export. For a single small order, the saving can disappear.

Is an Audited Supplier on Made-in-China always a factory?

An audited profile gives you more verified information, but read the actual report. A profile audit does not replace checking production capacity and your specific shipment.

Which platform should a first-time importer use?

Usually Alibaba.com or Made-in-China.com, because suppliers work in English and know export processes. Verify the company, approve a sample and plan an inspection whichever platform you use.
