Hong Kong to Shenzhen: train, MTR border and ferry

Which route is best?

Option 1: high-speed train from West Kowloon

This is the cleanest route with luggage. Trains leave Hong Kong West Kowloon for Futian and Shenzhen North. Futian is best for the central business district; Shenzhen North is the larger national rail hub.

Hong Kong and mainland immigration are completed at West Kowloon before boarding. That is convenient, but it means you must arrive earlier than for an ordinary domestic train. Book using the exact passport name through the official 12306 system or another platform, and carry the same passport.

Option 2: Hong Kong MTR to a land border

Take the East Rail Line to one of two terminal crossings:

• Lok Ma Chau → Futian Port: walk through both immigration controls and connect to Shenzhen Metro Lines 4 or 10. Choose this for Futian CBD, Convention & Exhibition Center and central Shenzhen.
• Lo Wu → Luohu: cross on foot and connect to Shenzhen Metro Line 1. Choose this for Luohu railway station, Dongmen shopping streets and the eastern side of the centre.

This route is flexible because you do not reserve a departure. It is also easy to underestimate: the MTR ride, immigration queues and Shenzhen metro transfer all count. Avoid arriving minutes before a border closes. Shenzhen’s official January 2026 crossing guide lists Futian Port at 6:30–22:30 and Luohu at 6:30–23:59, but always verify current hours before travelling.

Option 3: ferry to Shekou

The ferry is useful when your Shenzhen destination is Shekou, Sea World, Nanshan or the cruise-port area. It can also be convenient for selected Hong Kong airport connections. Schedules are less frequent than rail and can change with weather, so confirm the operator, terminal and baggage rules on the travel date.

Do not confuse Shekou Cruise Homeport with a central Shenzhen rail station. From Shekou you normally continue by metro or Didi.

Option 4: coach through Shenzhen Bay

Cross-border coaches connect parts of Hong Kong with Shenzhen Bay and other checkpoints. They can be practical for western Shenzhen, family luggage or a hotel close to a coach stop. Traffic makes the arrival time less predictable than rail. Some services require passengers to leave the vehicle with luggage for immigration; check the operator’s procedure.

Shenzhen’s official checkpoint page lists Shenzhen Bay passenger operations from 6:30 until midnight, subject to operational changes.

Before you cross: the five-point checklist

1. Confirm mainland entry eligibility. Hong Kong entry does not automatically give permission to enter mainland China.
2. Check re-entry. If you return to Hong Kong or later re-enter mainland China, your visa or visa-free eligibility must cover that movement.
3. Carry your passport and keep the Shenzhen hotel address in Chinese.
4. Complete the current arrival process required for your passport and crossing.

Entry rules can change. Check the Chinese immigration authority or embassy for your passport, not a social-media comment written for someone with a different nationality.

A realistic Shenzhen day trip from Hong Kong

For one day, do not try to “see Shenzhen”. Pick one story:

• Modern Shenzhen: cross at Futian, explore Civic Center, Shenzhen Museum, Lianhuashan Park and an evening skyline view.
• Design and food: OCT Loft, a local lunch, Nantou Ancient Town and Shenzhen Bay.
• Luohu and old-new contrast: Dongmen, local markets, KK100 area and a Cantonese dinner.
