Hong Kong airport to Shenzhen: the five options
| Option | Where you enter Shenzhen | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cross-boundary coach | Huanggang, Shenzhen Bay or Liantang (Heung Yuen Wai) | Most people, especially with luggage | Huanggang coaches run 05:30–02:15 |
| SkyPier ferry | Shekou or Fuyong (Shenzhen Airport) | Transfer passengers only, before Hong Kong immigration | Check the day’s status first |
| Airport Express + MTR | Lo Wu or Lok Ma Chau land crossings | Light luggage, daytime arrivals | Lo Wu closes at midnight |
| Airport Express + high-speed train | Futian or Shenzhen North from West Kowloon | Going on to other mainland cities | Clearance 06:30–23:30 |
| Cross-boundary car / limousine | Door to door across the border | Families, groups, late arrivals | Book in advance; most expensive |
The right choice depends on three things: whether you have already cleared Hong Kong immigration, what time you land and where in Shenzhen you are staying. The sections below take them one by one.
Cross-boundary coach: the default choice
For most arrivals the coach is the simplest option: you buy one ticket, keep your luggage with you and stay on board to the border. According to Hong Kong International Airport, coach tickets are sold at counters 01–16 of the Mainland/Macao Transport and Travel Services Centre on Level 3 of Terminal 2, and coaches board at bays 20–26 on the same level. Coaches to Shenzhen use three land crossings:
- Huanggang (Lok Ma Chau): 05:30–02:15, the best choice for Futian and late flights;
- Shenzhen Bay: 06:00–22:30, for Nanshan, Shekou and Bao’an;
- Heung Yuen Wai (Liantang): 07:30–20:00, for eastern Shenzhen.
The airport asks travellers to check details with each operator, so confirm the last departure on the day. Since 12 October 2026 the Huanggang coaches use the new Huanggang Port, which clears passengers 24 hours a day — see the border crossing hours guide for how the new building works.
SkyPier ferry: only if you are transferring
The airport’s SkyPier connects directly with ferry ports in Shenzhen, including Shekou and Fuyong, the pier for Shenzhen Airport. It is only for transfer passengers who have not entered Hong Kong: after landing you go to the ferry ticketing counter in Transfer Area E2 instead of immigration and baggage reclaim. Once you have cleared Hong Kong immigration, you can no longer use the ferry.
For the return trip, the airport asks you to be at the ferry check-in counter at least 60 minutes before the ferry and at SkyPier 90 to 120 minutes before your flight. Ferry services have been suspended on some routes in the past, so check the airport’s ferry page or your airline before you plan around it.
Airport Express and MTR to the land border
If you travel light and land in daytime, you can take the Airport Express into the city and change to the MTR East Rail line to Lo Wu (for Luohu) or Lok Ma Chau (for Futian Port). It involves several changes and carrying luggage through stations, so use the MTR journey planner before you set off. Remember the crossing hours: Lok Ma Chau Spur Line closes at 22:30 and Lo Wu at midnight.
High-speed train from West Kowloon
If Shenzhen is only your first stop, take the Airport Express to Kowloon and walk to Hong Kong West Kowloon station. Both Hong Kong and mainland immigration happen inside West Kowloon, where passenger clearance runs from 06:30 to 23:30. Trains run to Futian, Shenzhen North and on to Guangzhou and the rest of the network — see the high-speed train guide for booking tickets with a passport.
Cross-boundary car or limousine
Ordinary Hong Kong taxis cannot cross into the mainland. Cross-boundary hire cars and limousines with dual licence plates can, and they take you from the arrivals hall to your hotel door with a short stop at the border. They are the most comfortable option for families, groups and late flights, and the most expensive. Book with an authorised operator in advance; the Transport Department publishes how to identify them.
Landing late at night
After about 22:30 your options shrink. Coaches to Huanggang run until 02:15 and the new Huanggang Port clears passengers 24 hours, so that is the usual late-night route. On the Shenzhen side the metro does not run all night: book DiDi or take a taxi from the port.
Before you go
- Check your mainland entry: visa-free entry, a visa or 240-hour visa-free transit.
- Set up mobile data and Alipay or WeChat Pay before landing.
- Save your hotel address in Chinese and know which border crossing is closest to it.
- Keep Hong Kong dollars or a card for the coach ticket on the Hong Kong side.
