All Hong Kong–Shenzhen crossings and their opening hours
Hong Kong lists the passenger clearance hours of every control point on one Immigration Department page. The table below follows that list as shown on 29 October 2026 and adds the Shenzhen-side name you will see on signs, in DiDi and on the metro map. The hours are for passengers on foot or in buses and coaches; goods vehicles at Shenzhen Bay have their own 24-hour clearance.
| Hong Kong control point | Shenzhen side | Passenger hours | Shenzhen Metro |
|---|---|---|---|
| Huanggang (new Huanggang Port) | Huanggang Port, Futian | 24 hours | Line 7, Huanggang Checkpoint station |
| Lok Ma Chau Spur Line | Futian Port, Futian | 06:30–22:30 | Lines 4 and 10, Futian Checkpoint station |
| Lo Wu | Luohu Port, Luohu | 06:30–midnight | Line 1, Luohu station |
| Shenzhen Bay | Shenzhen Bay Port, Nanshan | 06:30–midnight | Line 13, Shenzhen Bay Checkpoint station |
| Heung Yuen Wai | Liantang Port, Luohu | 07:00–22:00 | Line 2, Liantang Checkpoint station |
| Man Kam To | Wenjindu Port, Luohu | 07:00–22:00 | — |
| Express Rail Link West Kowloon | High-speed trains to Futian, Shenzhen North and beyond | 06:30–23:30 | Depends on the arrival station |
| China Ferry Terminal (Tsim Sha Tsui) | Ferries to Macau and mainland ports | 07:00–midnight | Depends on the ferry pier |
| Sha Tau Kok | Shatoujiao | Suspended until further notice | — |
The Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge also clears passengers 24 hours a day, but it leads to Zhuhai and Macau, not to Shenzhen.
The new Huanggang Port: the only 24-hour land crossing
The rebuilt Huanggang Port in Futian opened for passengers at 06:30 on 12 October 2026. Hong Kong and Shenzhen describe it as the main round-the-clock land crossing between the two cities, and it clears passengers and passenger vehicles 24 hours a day. It replaced two older facilities at the same moment: passenger clearance at the Lok Ma Chau Control Point and at the temporary Shenzhen building stopped when the new port opened.
The port uses a co-location arrangement that the governments call collaborative inspection and joint clearance. Hong Kong exit and mainland entry happen in one building, and you queue once. According to the Hong Kong Security Bureau, the building has 134 automated channels and 68 manual counters, compared with 39 e-Channels and 45 counters at the old Lok Ma Chau Control Point.
Foreign passport: plan on the manual counters
The official eligibility list for the automated channels covers Hong Kong residents and mainland residents with the right permits and registrations. It does not list foreign passports. If you travel on a foreign passport, plan on the manual counters: you still queue once, but you show your passport to the Hong Kong officer and then to the mainland officer. Keep your onward hotel address ready in Chinese and have your mainland arrival details in order before you reach the hall.
Getting to Huanggang from Hong Kong
There is no public car park, so plan on public transport. The Hong Kong Port Area inside the building has a transport interchange with:
- Short-haul cross-boundary coaches running 24 hours from Mong Kok (Arran Street), Austin Road in Jordan, Lam Tin, Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai and Tsuen Wan;
- Franchised buses B10 to B15 in the daytime and the overnight NB73 to Sha Tin Town Centre;
- Green minibuses, including the overnight 616S to Mong Kok;
- Taxis, both red urban and green New Territories taxis.
On the Shenzhen side, Line 7 of the Shenzhen Metro stops at Huanggang Checkpoint station. The metro does not run all night, so after the last train use DiDi or a taxi.
Lok Ma Chau, Futian and the name trap
Since 12 October 2026 two different things carry the Lok Ma Chau name. The old Lok Ma Chau Control Point, the road crossing paired with the old Huanggang Port, no longer clears passengers. The Lok Ma Chau Spur Line control point at the end of the MTR East Rail line keeps working from 06:30 to 22:30. It connects by footbridge to Futian Port and to Futian Checkpoint station on Shenzhen Metro Lines 4 and 10.
If someone tells you to cross “at Lok Ma Chau”, ask which one. On the MTR the station is Lok Ma Chau; on the Shenzhen side it is Futian Port, which is different from Futian railway station, where high-speed trains from West Kowloon arrive. Our Hong Kong to Shenzhen guide compares these routes for a first visit.
Which crossing to use, by time of day and destination
- Crossing between midnight and 06:30: Huanggang is the only land option. Use a 24-hour short-haul coach or an overnight bus or minibus to reach it.
- First day trip to central Shenzhen: MTR East Rail to Lok Ma Chau, then Futian Port. Plan to be back before 22:30, or switch to Huanggang for a later return.
- Nanshan, Shekou or Shenzhen Bay hotels: Shenzhen Bay Port, open until midnight, with Line 13 on the Shenzhen side.
- Dongmen, Luohu or the old commercial centre: Lo Wu, open until midnight, straight onto Line 1.
- Eastern Shenzhen or Liantang: Heung Yuen Wai, 07:00–22:00, with Line 2 nearby.
- Onward to Guangzhou or further: high-speed train from West Kowloon, where clearance runs 06:30–23:30. See the high-speed train guide.
Queues, holidays and late returns
The Immigration Department warns that waits at Lo Wu, the Lok Ma Chau Spur Line, Shenzhen Bay and West Kowloon get longer at peak hours, at weekends, in holiday seasons and on public holidays. In my experience Friday evenings northbound and Sunday evenings southbound are the busiest, together with the days around Chinese New Year and Golden Week.
The Hong Kong Security Bureau publishes live clearance information for the control points, and it is worth a look before you choose. A closing time is the last moment to clear, not the time to arrive: give yourself at least 45 minutes before closing, especially at Futian, Heung Yuen Wai and Man Kam To, which close earliest. During major holidays the authorities sometimes extend hours at specific crossings; such extensions are announced separately, so do not rely on them unless you have seen the notice.
Before you go
- Check whether your passport needs a visa for the mainland, or whether 240-hour visa-free transit or ordinary visa-free entry applies to your trip.
- Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay and mobile data before the border, not in the arrival hall.
- Save your hotel’s address in Chinese and know which crossing and exit you will use.
- Keep some Hong Kong dollars or an Octopus card for the bus or coach on the Hong Kong side.
